What the Rent Bank Covers

Rent Arrears Support

For renters who have fallen behind on rent and are at risk of eviction.

First & Last Month’s Rent

For renters who need help securing stable housing when moving into a new unit.

Bridge Support

For renters experiencing a temporary income gap who need short-term coverage.

What BHOT Does NOT Cover

Utilities, damage deposits unrelated to rent, moving costs, or any non-rental expenses are outside the scope of the Rent Bank.

Loan & Grant Structure

Rent Bank support is provided as a combination of repayable loans and non-repayable grants, based on individual circumstances and assessed need. Repayable loans are structured with a 0% interest rate and flexible repayment terms tied to income recovery.

Important Policy — Funds Are Never Paid Directly to Members

BHOT never pays Rent Bank funds directly to members — ever. All rental payments are made directly to the verified landlord or property manager. This protects both the member and the integrity of the program.

Application Process

  1. Submit your application online or in person with proof of identity and housing situation.

  2. BHOT reviews your application and verifies your housing need and identity within 3–5 business days.

  3. BHOT contacts and verifies your landlord or property manager.

  4. A support decision is issued: loan, grant, or combined.

  5. BHOT issues payment directly to your landlord.

  6. If a loan component applies, a repayment plan is established based on your income.
